WestConnex is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project and is a critical part of a broader plan to get Sydney, and Australia, moving again. Along with the NSW Government’s record investment in public transport infrastructure, WestConnex is easing congestion, creating tens of thousands of jobs, and connecting communities.
When complete, WestConnex will provide motorists with a continuous, 33km traffic-light free motorway network, with connections for future projects linking the north shore and northern beaches, Sydney Airport and the southern suburbs.
WestConnex is being delivered in four major stages:
The M4 Tunnels opened to motorists in July 2019 and the M8 opened to motorists in July 2020. Both operational motorways are providing significant travel time savings to Sydney motorists.
The new extensions of the M4 and M8, 7.5km tunnels linking the M4 at Haberfield with the M8 at St Peters, with connections to the Anzac and Iron Cove bridges via the Rozelle Interchange opened in January 2023.
The final stage of WestConnex, the Rozelle Interchange, opening in 2024, is being delivered by the NSW Government and will connect the M4-M8 extension to the Anzac and Iron Cove bridges, and the future Western Harbour Tunnel.

WestConnex has been built with technology, innovation and safety at the forefront of its construction. Tap on the different icons to learn more about the technology that keeps you safe when travelling in our tunnels.
The WestConnex Plan Your Journey tool allows motorists the chance to take a “virtual drive” on the motorways, to get familiar with where the entry and exit points are and experience some of the features of the motorways.
